Die Ziele der Themengruppe "Polar- und Meerespolitik"
Erstens möchte die Themengruppe als Plattform politikwissenschaftliche Forschung zu Wandlungsprozessen in den Polar- und Meeresregionen bündeln und Interessierten einen Raum für gegenseitigen Austausch und die Entwicklung koordinierter Initiativen für eine systematische Abdeckung des Forschungsbedarfs zu bieten. Zum einen soll die bisher größtenteils auf die internationale Ebene und vorwiegend in Umwelt- und Sicherheitspolitik separierte Einzelforschung durch andere Meeres- und Polarpolitikfelder und andere Politikebenen ergänzt und thematisch zusammengebracht werden, um die praktisch wirksame Überlappung dieser Politikfelder auch forschungsmäßig abzubilden. Zum anderen soll großer Wert auch auf internationalen Austausch und auf die Beteiligung des akademischen Nachwuchses gelegt werden, da die wesentlichen Initiativen zu den meisten Aktivitäten der letzten Jahre von jüngeren WissenschaftlerInnen ausgegangen sind.
Zweitens möchte die Themengruppe aus der Politikwissenschaft heraus starke Bezüge in die weitere sozial-, rechts-, raum-, kultur- und naturwissenschaftliche Polar- und Meeresforschung herstellen und in diese Disziplinen hineinwirken. Die politikwissenschaftliche Polar- und Meeresforschung soll nicht nur als Begleitforschung Berücksichtigung finden, sondern ihren eigenständigen Beitrag und Platz in inter- und transdisziplinärer Forschung und den entsprechenden Forschungsprogrammen definieren und behaupten.
Drittens möchte die Themengruppe auch breiter in die Politikwissenschaft hineinwirken und Polar- und Meeresthemen verstärkt als relevante Fälle für die Forschung in verschiedenen Teildisziplinen bekanntmachen. Polar- und meerespolitische Themen funktionieren als einschlägige Beispiele für unterschiedliche politikwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen und als globale Trendbarometer. Daher soll in der Themengruppe auch die Beteiligung an den Aktivitäten anderer Arbeitskreisen bzw. Sektionen koordiniert werden.
Viertens möchte die Themengruppe sich als institutionalisiertes Forum langfristig als Ansprechpartner oder Vermittlungsstelle für Nachfragen nach politikwissenschaftlicher Forschung und Expertise in ihrem Themenfeld etablieren und sich an der Ausarbeitung entsprechender Forschungsprogramme beteiligen. Damit soll einerseits die Wahrscheinlichkeit erhöht werden, dass nachgefragte Politikberatung auch tatsächlich von thematisch ausgewiesenen ExpertInnen durchgeführt wird, andererseits sichergestellt werden, dass für den Erhalt und weitere Ausbildung dieser Expertise erforderlichen Forschungsmittel zur Verfügung stehen.

Objectives of the Polar and Ocean Politics Thematic Group
First, the thematic group aims to serve as a platform for political science research on processes of change in polar and maritime regions, offering interested parties a space for mutual exchange and the development of coordinated initiatives for the systematic coverage of research needs. On the one hand, individual research, which has so far been largely confined to the international level and predominantly separated into environmental and security policy, is to be supplemented by other maritime and polar policy fields and other policy levels and brought together thematically in order to reflect the practical overlap of these policy fields in research. On the other hand, great importance should also be attached to international exchange and the participation of young academics, as the main initiatives for most of the activities in recent years have come from younger scientists.
Second, the thematic group would like to establish strong links between political science and other social, legal, spatial, cultural and natural science polar and marine research and to influence these disciplines. Political science polar and marine research should not only be considered as accompanying research, but should define and assert its independent contribution and place in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and the corresponding research programmes.
Third, the thematic group also aims to have a broader impact on political science and to raise awareness of polar and maritime issues as relevant topics for research in various sub-disciplines. Polar and maritime policy issues serve as relevant examples for various political science questions and as global trend barometers. For this reason, the thematic group will also coordinate participation in the activities of other working groups and sections.
Fourth, the thematic group aims to establish itself as an institutionalised forum and long-term point of contact or intermediary for enquiries regarding political science research and expertise in its field, and to participate in the development of corresponding research programmes. On the one hand, this should increase the likelihood that the policy advice requested will actually be provided by experts with proven expertise in the field, and on the other hand, it should ensure that the research funds necessary for maintaining and further developing this expertise are available.
